ICD-10-CM Code I63
Cerebral infarction
Non-Billable Code
Non-Billable means the code is not sufficient justification for admission to an acute care hospital when used a principal diagnosis. Use a child code to capture more detail.ICD Code I63 is a non-billable code. To code a diagnosis of this type, you must use one of the nine child codes of I63 that describes the diagnosis 'cerebral infarction' in more detail.

The ICD code I63 is used to code Cerebral infarction
A cerebral infarction is a type of ischemic stroke resulting from a blockage in the blood vessels supplying blood to the brain. It can be atherothrombotic or embolic. Stroke caused by cerebral infarction should be distinguished from two other kinds of stroke: cerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage. A cerebral infarction occurs when a blood vessel that supplies a part of the brain becomes blocked or leakage occurs outside the vessel walls. This loss of blood supply results in the death of tissue in that area. Cerebral infarctions vary in their severity with one third of the cases resulting in death.

-
Code Includes Notes:
Includes
Includes notes further define, or give examples of, conditions included in the section. - Occlusion and stenosis of cerebral and precerebral arteries, resulting in cerebral infarction
-
Additional Code Note:
Use Additional Code
Use Additional Code note means a second code must be used in conjunction with this code. Codes with this note are Etiology codes and must be followed by a Manifestation code or codes. - Code, if applicable, to identify status post administration of tPA (rtPA) in a different facility within the last 24 hours prior to admission to current facility See code Z92.82
-
Code Type-1 Excludes:
Type-1 Excludes
Type-1 Excludes mean the conditions excluded are mutually exclusive and should never be coded together. Excludes 1 means "do not code here." - Sequelae of cerebral infarction - instead, use code I69.3-
